What are "Energy Drinks"?
Energy drinks are beverages that are marketed as a way to boost energy and mental alertness. They typically contain a high amount of caffeine, as well as sugar, other sweeteners, and various other ingredients, such as taurine, guarana, L-carnitine, B vitamins, and herbal extracts .
The amount of caffeine in energy drinks can vary widely, from around 50 milligrams (mg) to over 300 mg per can or bottle. This is much more caffeine than a cup of coffee (typically around 80 mg) or a can of soda (around 30 mg).
Energy drinks are popular among teenagers and young adults, but they can also be dangerous. The high levels of caffeine can lead to a number of health problems, including:
Increased heart rate and blood pressure
Anxiety
Insomnia
Stomach cramps
Dehydration
Seizures
In severe cases, energy drinks can even lead to death.
